The Ds2mb.dll component causes open registry handles to leak memory in Exchange 2000 Server (828225)

SYMPTOMS

When registry handles are opened by the Directory-service-to-Metabase-replication component (Ds2mb.dll) in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, the open registry handles may start to leak and may not be accessible by other programs.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Ds2mb.dll component cannot access the RegCloseKey function that is used to close the open registry handles.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
