"The Memory Could Not Be Read" Error Message When You Open an E-Mail Message (828133)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open an e-mail message, close the e-mail message, open another e-mail message, and then open the first e-mail message again, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
SysFader: Msimn.exe - Application Error: The instruction at "0x77ec83c4" referenced memory at "0x00400067". The memory could not be "read".

Msimn.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

Note You may have to repeat this process several times before you receive the error message.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you receive an e-mail message that does not contain a From field but does contain a Sender field.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6 service pack that contains this hotfix.
