Orphaned processes are created when you exit from a Telnet session by clicking Close (828109)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you exit from a Telnet client session that is connected to a Telnet server, and you click Close, a problem occurs. The child processes that are running in the session become orphaned processes.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you click Close. You are supposed to type exit to end the Telnet session.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, type exit to close the Telnet session.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Set up the Telnet server service in Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
  2. Connect to the Telnet server from a Windows Telnet client.
  3. Run the "more" command on a large file.
  4. Open Task Manager and notice the "more" process.
  5. Click Close.

    On the Task Manager Processes tab, notice that the "more" process remains in the list.
Note This problem is scheduled to be fixed in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
