WMSDE Setup Unexpectedly Starts and You Receive an "Unable to Run Script File" Error Message When You Add or Remove a Windows Component on a Server That Is Running Windows SharePoint Services and WMSDE (827927)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
SYMPTOMSWhen you click Add/Remove Windows
Components in the Add or Remove Programs tool to add or remove a
Microsoft Windows component by using the Windows Components Wizard, you may
find that Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) (WMSDE) Setup
unexpectedly starts, and you receive an error message that is similar to the
following: Unable to run the script files When
you try to access your Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site after you
click OK on the error message, you receive the following error
message: Cannot connect to the configuration database.
Additionally, when you view the list of currently installed programs
in the Add or Remove Programs tool, the entry for WMSDE appears as
Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine
(SharePoint)(SharePoint). CAUSEThis issue may occur if the following conditions are true,
in the order that they are presented:
- You log on to server as a user who has administrator
credentials and install Windows SharePoint Services and WMSDE on the server by
using the Typical Installation option.
- You log off the server.
- You (or another user) logs on to the server as a different
user (who has administrator credentials) and use the Windows Components Wizard
in the Add or Remove Programs tool to add or remove a Windows
component.
In this situation, WMSDE tries to reconfigure itself for the new
user, and Windows SharePoint Services is disconnected from the configuration
database. WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, stop and restart the WMSDE SQL
Service. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Control
Panel, point to Administrative Tools, and then click
Component Services.
- Click Services on the left pane of the
Component Services window.
- Right-click the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service
on the list in the right pane, and then click Stop.
- Right-click the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service
on the list in the right pane, and then click
Start.
- Close the Component Services window.
STATUS Microsoft
