You receive an "Error 502" error message when you access SharePoint Central Administration pages after you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) (827920)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you run SharePoint Portal Server Setup to install Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) on the server, and then click Finish on the Completing the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Setup Wizard page, the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page of SharePoint Central Administration may not be displayed in your Web browser window. Instead, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Error 502
You receive the same error message when you try to connect to other SharePoint Central Administration pages.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if a proxy server is configured in Microsoft Internet Explorer but the Bypass proxy server for local addresses option is not enabled. SharePoint Portal Server Setup does not look to see if proxy server settings in Internet Explorer are configured correctly on the server.

This problem may occur in situations when you install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 from a Remote Installation Services (RIS) server by using an RIS image that uses the default proxy server settings for Internet Explorer, where the Bypass proxy for local address option is not enabled.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, enable the Bypass proxy server for local addresses option in the proxy server settings of Internet Explorer. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer if it is not already started.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Connections tab, and then under Local Area Network (LAN) settings, click LAN Settings.
  4. Under Proxy server, click to select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box, and then click OK
  5. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
