When you try to make an audio recording in OneNote 2003, you receive a "The audio device on your computer is not up to date" error message (827912)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to make an audio recording in Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, you may receive the following error message:
The audio device on your computer is not up to date. DirectX 8.1 or later and Windows Media Player 8 or later are required to record sound. Download the current versions, and then try again.
You may also receive the following error message:
OneNote cannot play this recording. It is possible that it was created using a Microsoft Windows Media codec version that is newer than your version of Windows Media Player. You can download the newest version of Windows Media Player from the Download Center on the Microsoft.com Web site.
This problem may occur even if you have installed Microsoft DirectX 9.0 and Microsoft Windows Media Player 8.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the latest versions of DirectX and Windows Media Player.
