Time stamps may not be synchronized correctly on a large Symmetric Multiprocessing computer that is running Windows Server 2003 (827909)

SYMPTOMS

Time stamps may not be synchronized correctly on a large Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if a program queries a Time Stamp Counter (TSC) in one processor for a time stamp, and the Task Scheduler service moves the program to another processor. When the program queries another processor's TSC, the time stamp information is not synchronized with the previous query to the other processor.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
