Duotones Are Displayed and Separated Incorrectly (827908)

SYMPTOMS

If you import a duotone Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) graphic in a publication, that EPS graphic will be displayed as lighter in color than expected, and its output will appear incorrectly as color separations.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, print the publication as composite cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK), and then use another program to color-separate it (or use your Raster Image Processor [RIP], if it supports in-RIP separations). To print a publication as composite CMYK, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Print.
  2. Click Advanced Print Settings.
  3. On the Separations tab, click Composite CMYK in the Output list.
  4. Make any other settings changes that you want, and then click OK.
  5. In the Print dialog box, make any other settings changes that you want, and then click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

A duotone is a graphic that is made by taking a grayscale raster-based image and then assigning different ink colors to different shades of gray. Technically, a duotone contains only two ink colors; if it contains three ink colors, it is a tritone.

The only graphic file formats that support duotones are the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) and the Adobe Photoshop Document (PSD) formats. Because Publisher does not have a PSD graphic import filter, if you want to import a duotone graphic in a publication, you must import it as an EPS file.
