You receive an "Unexpected Error occurred" error message when you connect to the configuration database in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (827841)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to the configuration database to join a server to a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 server farm, you receive the following message in the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration utility:
Unexpected Error occurred.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if a networking problem exists on the server that you want to add to the server farm. For example, if the server has an incorrect Internet Protocol (IP) address. In this case, SharePoint Portal Server generates the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. However, this error message does not describe why you cannot connect to the configuration database.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, verify the network settings and connectivity on the server that you want to join to the server farm.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

SharePoint Portal Server generates the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section when this scenario occurs. However, more specific error information may appear in the system log in the Event Viewer.
