You cannot manage the user profile database after you change your password (827840)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to manage user profiles in your portal site in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you receive one of the following error messages:
Error occurred while accessing user profile backend or certain system resources. Please try it again later. If this problem persists, please contact SPS support.
-or-
An error occurred while setting the schedule. Please check below for details.

No change has been committed to database.
When you view the SharePoint Portal Service log files, you notice information that is similar to the following:

Message: Fail to retrieve profile import status.
StackTrace: at Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.UserProfiles.UserProfileConfigManager.GetImportStatus() at Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.UserProfiles.AdminUI.ProfMain.b() at Microsoft.SharePoint.Portal.UserProfiles.AdminUI.ProfMain.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e)
InnerException Message: Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040D1B.

To manage user profiles in your portal site, click Site Settings, and then click Manage profile database.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if both of the following conditions exist:
  • You change the password of the administrator account that you used to install SharePoint Portal Server.

    -and-
  • The Microsoft SharePointPS Search service has not been restarted on the job server.
In this scenario, the profile import project may not initialize correctly as indicated by the following error information in the log file:

GTHR_E_PROJECT_NOT_INITIALIZED

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, confirm the credentials for the Microsoft SharePointPS Search service on the job server, and then restart the Microsoft SharePointPS Search service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Determine the job server. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Start SharePoint Central Administration.
    2. Under Server Configuration, click Configure server topology.
    3. Click Change components.
    4. Note the server that is listed in the Job server list, and then click Cancel.
  2. Restart the Microsoft SharePointPS Search service. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. On the job server, click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. In the list of services, double-click Microsoft SharePointPS Search, and then click the Log On tab.
    3. In the Password and Confirm password boxes, type the new valid password for the account that appears in the This account box.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Click the Start link to start the Microsoft SharePointPS Search service.
