To resolve this issue and to completely remove Money, follow these steps:

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Use a clean boot to restart your computer.

See the "More Information" section later in this article for details about how to perform a clean boot.
  2. Delete the following folder (if it exists on your hard disk) where Drive is the drive where Money is installed:

    Drive :\Program Files\Microsoft Money

To do so, follow these steps:
    1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
    2. Locate the following folder, right-click the Microsoft Money folder, and then click Delete:

      Drive :\Program Files\Microsoft Money

    3. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
  3. Click Start, and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  5. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Money

  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. Delete the Windows Installer-related registry keys for Money.

Important Make sure that you delete the correct registry keys. The 32-character alphanumeric names of the Windows Installer-related registry keys that store Money information and that appear in the list later in this article are specific to the version and edition of Money that is installed on your computer. For example, the names of the keys are different for Money 2003 Standard and Money Deluxe 2002.

The following is a list of the Windows Installer-related registry keys for Money that you must delete (if the keys are present in the registry on your computer), where hex-key is a 32-character alphanumeric strings that are specific to the version and edition of Money that is installed on your computer:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\hex-key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\hex-key

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\hex-key

Important Make sure that you delete the correct registry key. Before you delete the registry key, make sure that the key references Money and not another program. To identify the key and confirm that it that stores Money information before you delete it, follow these steps:
    1. Click the registry key, and then in the right pane, double-click either the DisplayName or the ProductName value (as appropriate).

Note For the following registry key, the DisplayName value is stored in the InstallProperties subkey:

Click the InstallProperties subkey, and then in the right pane, double-click the DisplayName value.
    2. Double-click the DisplayName or the ProductName value (as appropriate).
    3. Make a note of the value that appears in the Value data box.

If the value that appears in the Value data box is either Microsoft Money Version or Microsoft Money Version System Pack, you can delete the key that stores the value. Do not delete the key if the value the Value data box displays a value that is not related to Money.
    4. After you confirm that the key that you want to delete is related to Money, right-click the key, and then click Delete.

How to Perform a Clean Boot Operation

A clean boot is a way to create a clean environment. When you start your computer with a clean boot, Microsoft Windows starts and loads only basic devices and services. To perform a clean boot, follow the steps that are appropriate for your version of Windows:

Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Millennium Edition (Me), follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

    The System Configuration Utility starts.
  2. Click the General tab, and then click Selective startup.
  3. Under Selective startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Win.ini file
    • Load startup group items
    • Load environment variables
  4. Click the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box, and then click OK.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
  5. After the computer restarts, click Start, and then click Run.
  6. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  7. Click the General tab, and then verify that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared.

If you see a selected, unavailable check box (it appears dimmed and has a check mark in it), the clean boot was not successful. If this problem occurs, you may have to obtain assistance from the manufacturer of the program that is listed next to the selected, unavailable check box.
After you remove the Money folder, to restore the computer to use a normal startup, start the System Configuration Utility, click the General tab, click Normal Startup, click OK, and then restart the computer.
