Rise of Nations: Game unexpectedly quits or you receive a black screen during startup (827813)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Rise of Nations, the game may unexpectedly quit or the screen may turn black.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the most recent Rise of Nations Update and change the settings in the Rise2.ini file. To obtain the most recent update, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Click Check for Updates

To look for updates, follow these steps:
  1. Start Rise of Nations.
  2. On the Main menu, click Check for Updates.
  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to update Rise of Nations.
Note If you do not have a Check for Updates button, use Method 2.

Method 2: Check downloads

Visit the "Downloads" page for Rise of Nations, locate the "Game Updates" section, and then download and install the latest game update. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site: To change the settings in the Rise2.ini file, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type %appdata%\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations, and then click OK.
  2. Open the Rise2.ini file.
  3. Under the [RISE OF NATIONS] section, replace the "SkipIntroMovies=" line with the following text: SkipIntroMovies=1.
  4. Under the [RISE OF NATIONS] section, replace the "ForceLowCPUBackgroundVid=" line with the following text: ForceLowCPUBackgroundVid=1.
  5. Save and then close the Rise2.ini file.
