The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition

try to specify an action in the Action column on the

occurred. Additionally, the Exchange Setup Progress.log file contains

CAUSEThis issue occurs if both the following conditions are true:
- The domain controller in your site is running Microsoft
Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3).
-and- - The value of the
OperatingSystemServicePack attribute of the domain controller
uses all uppercase letters and is set to SERVICE PACK
3.
Exchange 2003 Setup queries the domain controller in the site
for the version of the service pack that is installed on the domain controller.
If the domain controller is running Windows 2000 SP3, Exchange 2003 Setup
expects the value of the OperatingSystemServicePack attribute
to be set to Service Pack 3. You receive the symptoms that the
"Symptoms" section of this article describes if the value of the
OperatingSystemServicePack attribute is set to SERVICE
PACK 3 instead of Service Pack 3. WORKAROUNDWarning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other
LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active
Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require
you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003,
Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, or both Windows
and Exchange. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you
incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify
these attributes at your own risk.
To work around this issue:
- On the server where you want to install Exchange 2003, run
Exchange 2003 Setup.
- When the Component Selection page of the
Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard appears on your screen, go to step
3.
- On the domain controller, use ADSI Edit to change the value
of the OperatingSystemServicePack attribute of the domain
controller from SERVICE PACK 3 to Service Pack
3. To do so:
- Start ADSI Edit.
- Expand Domain
[ServerName.Domain.com].
- Expand
DC=Domain,DC=com, and then expand
OU=Domain Controllers.
- Right-click the appropriate domain controller, and then
click Properties.
- Click the Attributes tab.
- In the Select which properties to view
box, click Both.
- In the Select a property to view box,
click OperatingSystemServicePack.
- In the Edit Attribute box, type
Service Pack 3, click Set, and then click
OK.
- Quit ADSI Edit.
- On the server where you are installing Exchange 2003,
specify the action that you want to perform in the Action
column of the Component Selection page of the Microsoft
Exchange Installation Wizard.
- Follow the instructions on the remaining pages of the
wizard to install Exchange 2003 on the server.
