"Save Word files as" setting cannot be set as Word Document (*.doc) in the Office 2003 Custom Installation Wizard (827723)

SYMPTOMS

In the Custom Installation Wizard for Microsoft Office 2003, when you set the Save Word files as option as Word Document (*.doc), the setting is not configured.

To see this behavior, go to step 10 of the "More Information" section.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior and to make sure that the default Save Word files as setting in Microsoft Office Word 2003 is set to Word Document (*.doc), add the DefaultFormat value to the Add/Remove Registry Entries in your MST file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, point to Microsoft Office 2003 Resource Kit, and then click Custom Installation Wizard.
  2. In the Custom Installation Wizard pane, click Next.
  3. In the Open the MSI File pane, specify the MSI file that you want to use, and then click Next.
  4. In the Open the MST File pane, specify the MST file that you want to use, and then click Next.
  5. In the Select the MST File to Save pane, click the down-arrow for the pane control box (4 of 24), and then click 12 Add/Remove Registry Entries.
  6. On the Add Registry Entry tab, click Add.
  7. In the Add/Modify Registry Entry dialog box, follow these steps:
    1. In the Root box, click HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
    2. In the Data type box, click REG_SZ.
    3. In the Key box, type Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options.
    4. In the Value name box, type DefaultFormat.
    5. In the Value data box, do not type anything.

      Leave the Value data box empty.
    6. Click OK to close the Add/Modify Registry Entry dialog box.
  8. In the Add/Modify Registry Entry dialog box, click Finish.
  9. Click Exit to quit the Custom Installation Wizard.

To configure the Save Word files as option in the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW), follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, point to Microsoft Office 2003 Resource Kit, and then click Custom Installation Wizard.
  2. In the Custom Installation Wizard pane, click Next.
  3. In the Open the MSI File pane, specify the MSI file that you want to use, and then click Next.
  4. In the Open the MST File pane, specify the MST file that you want to use, and then click Next.
  5. In the Select the MST File to Save pane, click the down-arrow for the pane control box (4 of 24), and then click 10 Change Office User Settings.
  6. Expand Microsoft Office Word 2003.
  7. Expand Tools | Options.
  8. Click Save.
  9. In the Settings list, double-click Save Word files as.
  10. In the Save Word files as Properties dialog box, click Apply Changes.

    In the Save Word files as box, select the format that you want as the default document to save in Word, and then click OK.

    Note To see the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section, select Word Document(*.doc) in the Save Word files as box, click OK, and then click Next. In the Add/Remove Files pane, click Back. In the Change Office User Settings pane, click Show configured settings only.
  11. Click Finish to complete the Custom Installation Wizard.
  12. Click Exit to quit the Custom Installation Wizard.
