Overview of the Office 97 WordPerfect 5.x Converter Security hotfix: September 3, 2003 (827656)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 98 (Japanese)

SUMMARY

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and Japanese Microsoft Word for Windows 98. This update fixes a security problem where a buffer overrun is possible when you import a Corel WordPerfect file with your Microsoft Office 97 program.

This article describes how to download and install the Office 97 WordPerfect 5.x Converter Security Patch.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.

Note The Microsoft Office products that are listed at the beginning of this article were developed when the security threat was very different. As a result, they do not include the improved security architecture of more recent versions of Office, such as macro security. Because macro security is not included in Microsoft Office 97, the fix that is described in this article may be compromised. Microsoft recommends that customers use Microsoft Office 2003; the level of security in Microsoft Office 2003 is higher than in Microsoft Office 97.

Important Before you install the Office 97 WordPerfect 5.x Converter Security Patch, install the Microsoft Word 97 Service Release 2b (SR-2b). Although the Office 97 WordPerfect 5.x Converter Security Patch will install if you do not have Word 97 SR-2b installed on your computer, the Word 97 Patch is only supported by Microsoft on Word 97 SR-2b.

Note After you install the Office 97 WordPerfect 5.x Converter Security Patch, you cannot remove it. To return to an installation before the patch was installed, you must remove all of Office 97, and then install it again from the original CD.
