Device Driver Does Not Start on Windows Server 2003 if the Medium Changer Device or the Autoloader Device Is Attached to an Adaptec Ultra 160 SCSI Controller (827548)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you install a medium changer device or an autoloader device on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, the driver for the device loads and an entry appears in Device Manager under Medium Changers. However, the device entry is marked with a yellow exclamation mark icon. On the General tab of Device Properties, the status for this device appears as follows:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

This problem occurs if the medium changer device or the autoloader device is attached to an Adaptec Ultra 160 small computer system interface (SCSI) controller card (such as the ASC-29160 Host Adapter).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the inbox driver (Adpu160m.sys) for the Adaptec Ultra 160 SCSI controller in Windows Server 2003 does not allow sufficient time for the medium changer device or the autoloader device to respond to the initialization sequence. A timeout condition occurs that causes the device driver to report an error to Device Manager.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, contact Adaptec to obtain an updated Ultra 160 SCSI device driver that correctly supports medium changers devices and autoloader devices.
