An NDR message is delivered to an Exchange mailbox even though the mailbox size exceeds the Exchange 2000 Server quota size (827413)

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange administrator configures a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server mailbox quota so that you do not receive mail when the mailbox size exceeds the quota size. However, a non-delivery report (NDR) message is still delivered to this mailbox even though the mailbox size exceeds the quota size.

For example, assume a situation where the Exchange 2000 Server mailbox has a quota size of 5 megabytes (MB). You send an e-mail message with a 10 MB attachment from this Exchange 2000 mailbox. This e-mail message is sent to a non-existent address that is located on a non-Exchange mail system.

In this situation, an NDR message with the 10 MB attachment is still delivered to the mailbox even though the mailbox size exceeds the quota size.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
