Prepress: Spot Colors in Linked EPS Files Do Not Appear in the Colors List (827299)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003
  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 with Digital Image Pro

SYMPTOMS

When you open a publication that contains one or more linked Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) graphics that have spot colors defined in them, those colors do not appear in the Colors list for the publication.

CAUSE

When you link an EPS graphic to a publication, the EPS import filter only provides Publisher 2003 with a low-resolution RGB preview image. This preview image does not contain any spot color definitions. Publisher 2003 does not receive the full resolution EPS information until print time. The spot colors that are defined for the EPS graphics print correctly.

WORKAROUND

If you want the spot colors to be listed in the Colors list, you must convert the linked EPS graphics to an embedded picture. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Graphics Manager.
  2. In the Graphics Manager pane, click a linked EPS graphic.
  3. In the drop-down list, click Convert to Embedded Picture.
  4. On the Tools menu, point to Commercial Printing Tools, and then click Color Printing.
  5. Click the Colors tab.

The spot colors in the EPS file now appear in the list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
