You receive an error 1411 error message and cannot ungroup CAD display objects in Visio 2003 or in Visio 2002 (827243)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Visio 2003 or in Microsoft Visio 2002, when you open a Visio (.vsd) drawing that contains a CAD display object, and then you try to ungroup the CAD display object, you receive the following error message:

An error (1411) occurred during the action Ungroup
There was an error reading or writing OLE data.

Note To ungroup the CAD display object, on the Shape menu, point to Grouping, and then click Ungroup.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Visio does not support the use of the Ungroup function to modify a CAD display object in a Visio drawing, even though the Ungroup command is available in Visio when you are working with a CAD display object.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must convert the CAD object in the Visio drawing to Visio shapes. After you convert the CAD object, you can modify or delete the shapes in the Visio drawing. To convert the CAD object to Visio shapes, follow these steps:

Start Visio 2003 or Visio 2002.
On the File menu, click Open.
Locate the file that contains the CAD object, and then click Open.
Right-click inside the drawing that you just opened, point to CAD Drawing Object, click Convert, and then click OK.

After the conversion is complete, you can modify the Visio shapes in the drawing.
