Bold Mtext in AutoCAD Drawing Does Not Appear As Bold in Visio 2003 (827241)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Visio 2003, when you open an AutoCAD file that contains bold multiline text (Mtext), the text does not appear as bold. If you convert the AutoCAD drawing into Visio format, the text does appear as bold.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because there are a several types of formatting in AutoCAD's Mtext entities that are not supported by Visio for display purposes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, if you convert the AutoCAD drawing into Visio format (right-click inside the AutoCAD drawing, point to CAD Drawing Object, click Convert, and then click OK), the text appears with the correct formatting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The following list contains the most common types of formatting that you may use in AutoCAD's Mtext entities that Visio does not support for display purposes:
  • If you override the font that is associated with the Mtext's style, the change is ignored by Visio.

    Note You can change the Textstyle from AutoCAD's Mtext Editor, but the change is ignored by Visio.
  • The use of bold and italic (unless the font itself is defined as bold or italic).
  • Line spacing.
  • The use of {} to define the scope of Mtext escape sequences. This is used behind the scenes by AutoCAD when you select a portion of the text to apply formatting to. Visio will change the formatting when "{" is encountered, but will not restore the previous formatting when "}" is encountered.
