  • Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Visio 2003, when you try to use surrogate pair characters when you name an object in the Drawing Explorer window, the surrogate pair characters do not appear correctly. The characters appear as square boxes. For example, when you right-click Foreground Pages in the Drawing Explorer window, click Insert Page, use surrogate pair characters in the Name box, and then click OK, the characters appear as square boxes.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Drawing Explorer tree view does not currently support surrogate pair characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not use surrogate pair characters in the Name box of an object in the Drawing Explorer window, or when you rename an object in the Drawing Explorer window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

A surrogate pair is a pair of 16-bit Unicode code values that represent a single character. The first surrogate is a 16-bit code value in the range U+D800 to U+DBFF. The second surrogate is a 16-bit code value in the range U+DC00 to U+DFFF. Surrogate pairs extend the character set beyond the Unicode characters. By using surrogates pairs, Unicode can support over one million characters. For more information about surrogate pairs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
