Previously edited e-mail messages may show a single character or may appear blank (827192)

SYMPTOMS

When you edit and reply or forward a plain text e-mail message that you received and previously edited in Microsoft Word, the message body text may have characters that are corrupted, and may lose the original message body.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all the following conditions are true:
  • You receive a plain text e-mail message that was sent on a computer that has Japanese regional and language options turned on.
  • Word was not turned on as the e-mail editor on the sending computer.
  • The encoding type for the received e-mail message is set to Japanese (JIS).
  • You edit the received plain text e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook 2000 as Rich Text Format (RTF) and with Word as your e-mail editor.
  • You edit the plain text e-mail message and type either Single Byte Character Set (SBCS) or Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) characters.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Office 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
