MSN Messenger contacts and online status of MSN Messenger are not displayed in Outlook 2003 (826970)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you sign in to MSN Messenger after you start Outlook 2003, Outlook does not display your online status in MSN Messenger, or your MSN Messenger contacts.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you have Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.6 or Windows Messenger 4.7 started, and also have MSN Messenger 5.0 started at the same time.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, quit MSN Messenger. To do this, click the MSN Messenger icon in the taskbar, and then click Exit.

MORE INFORMATION

Typically, MSN Messenger starts automatically whenever you start Microsoft Windows, unless you turn off this setting in your Messenger options. However, if you set up Windows Messenger for corporate instant messaging and to start automatically when you start Windows, it will continue in this manner and MSN Messenger will not start automatically.

To configure MSN Messenger not to start automatically when you start Windows, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MSN Messenger.
  2. Click Sign-in.
  3. In the MSN Messenger window, click Tools, click Options, click the General tab, and then click to clear the Run Messenger when Windows starts check box.
  4. Click OK.
