SYMPTOMS
You may receive the following error message when you use the
fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo volume path command:
Error: Access is denied.
You may receive this error message when you use the
fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo volume path command and the following conditions are true:
- You use the command to query volume information that is specific to the NTFS file system.
- You are querying volume information on a volume that is mounted in an empty NTFS folder.
- You use the name of the empty NTFS folder for the volume path.
The command works correctly when you use the drive letter as the volume path.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use the
fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo volume path command on the volume. Use the drive letter for the volume path instead of the name of the empty NTFS folder.
For example, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. Replace
volume path with the drive letter of the volume:
fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo volume path
Sometimes, a drive letter may not be assigned to the volume. To assign a drive letter to the volume, follow these steps:
- In Disk Management, right-click the volume, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Click Add, and then click Assign the following drive letter.
- Select the drive letter that you want to use, and then click OK two times.
