The Web page is not updated after you update a cascading style sheet (.css file) on your portal site in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (826800)

SYMPTOMS

In SharePoint Portal Server 2003 when you view a Web page on the portal site after you update a cascading style sheet (.css file) on the portal, the Web page is not updated with the style elements that are defined in the new cascading style sheet. The Web page still uses style elements from the cascading style sheet that was previously used for the portal site.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:
  • The cascading style sheet that was previously used for the portal site is cached by your Web browser.
  • You do not refresh the Web page after the cascading style sheet is updated on the portal.
The cascading style sheet that is sent to the Web browser from the server is cached for 30 days. As a result, the updated cascading style sheet is not displayed in your Web browser if the cached copy of the cascading style sheet is not refreshed before the expiration date.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do either of the following:
  • Press F5 to refresh the Web page. After you do so, the Web page is updated with the styles that are defined in the new cascading style sheet.
  • Empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder on the client computer. To do so in Microsoft Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
    1. Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already started).
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3. Click the General tab.
    4. Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Files.
    5. Click OK when you are prompted to confirm the deletion, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

To avoid the problem that is described earlier in the "Symptoms" section of this article and update a cascading style sheet so that it is refreshed on the client Web browser, follow these steps:
  1. In a text editor or in an HTML editor, create a new .css file.
  2. Update the styles that you want in the .css file, and then save the file by using a name that is not already used by another .css file on the server.

    For better performance and to make sure that all users have access to the file, you may want to save the file to the same folder that contains the Sps.css file. By default, the Sps.css file is located in the following folder:

    Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\Template\Admin\1033\SPS\Styles

  3. Configure the portal site to the use the custom .css file. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. On the home page of your portal site, click Site Settings.
    2. On the Site Setting page, under General Settings, click Change portal site properties and SharePoint site creation settings.
    3. On the Change Portal Site Properties and SharePoint Site Creation Settings page, in the Custom Cascading Style Sheet area, type the path of the .css file that you created earlier in step 2 in the Location of cascading style sheet file box.

      Note If the file location is a local relative path (for example, /_layouts/1033/MyStyleSheet.css), you must copy the cascading style sheet file to that location on each front-end Web server. For better performance, you may want to copy the file to the _layouts folder on each front-end Web server.
