You cannot re-install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (826794)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you remove SharePoint Portal Server, when you try to re-install SharePoint Server, the installation may stop, and SharePoint server may be removed from your computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you upgrade Microsoft Office 2003 Beta, or Microsoft Office 2003 Technical Refresh to the original released version of Microsoft Office. This problem occurs because you have an earlier version of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine installed on your computer, and it was not removed before you try to install SharePoint Server. SharePoint Server Setup does not detect the previous version of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine on your computer, and after Setup installs SharePoint Server, Setup tries to install Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine. However, because Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine is already installed, the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine installation is not successful. As a result, the SharePoint Server Setup program removes the installation of SharePoint Server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must fully remove the following programs, in this order:
  • SharePoint Portal Server
  • Windows SharePoint Services
  • SQL Server Desktop Engine
Warning Most files and subfolders that are in installation folders are removed. All the Microsoft SQL Server databases are detached, but not removed, from the database server.

To fully remove SharePoint Portal Server, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the server that is running SharePoint Portal Server with an account that has local or domain administrator credentials.
  2. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and then click Change.
  4. On the Welcome to the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Setup Wizard page, click Next.
  5. On the Maintenance Mode Options page, click Remove the server components of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and then click Next.
  6. In the confirmation message box, click Yes to remove SharePoint Portal Server, and then click OK.
  7. Return to the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Windows SharePoint Services, and then click Remove.
  8. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Yes.
  9. Return to the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click SQL Server Desktop Engine, and then click Remove.
  10. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Yes.
  11. Close Add or Remove Programs, and then close Control Panel.
