Traditional Chinese end-user-defined characters (EUDC) do not appear correctly after you install Office 2003 (826711)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Office 2003, or Microsoft Office Word 2003, you find that Traditional Chinese end-user-defined characters (EUDC) do not appear correctly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions are true:
  • You install Office 2003 or Word 2003 by using the Complete Install option during Microsoft Office 2003 Setup.

    -or-
  • You choose the Run from My Computer option for the Korean font in a custom installation.
The problem occurs because the Korean font (New Gulim) that is installed with the complete installation can replace Traditional Chinese end-user-defined characters.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem from occurring, if you are using Traditional Chinese end-user-defined characters, install Office 2003 by using a custom installation, and then choose the Installed on First Use option for the Korean font. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Office 2003 Setup, and then click Custom Installation.
  2. In the Features to install list, expand Office Shared Features.
  3. Expand International Support.
  4. Click the down arrow next to Korean Font, and then click Installed on First Use or Not Available.
  5. Continue with the remaining steps in the wizard to complete the installation of Office 2003.
To fix this problem if you have already installed Office 2003, remove the Korean font. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Office 2003, and then click Change.
  4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  5. In the Features to install list, expand Office Shared Features.
  6. Expand International Support.
  7. Click the down arrow next to Korean Font, and then click Installed on First Use or Not Available.
  8. Insert your Office 2003 CD in your CD-ROM drive when you are prompted, and then click OK.
  9. Click OK when Office 2003 Setup is complete.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
