You Receive an "Account Unknown" Message When You Assign a Permission to a File or You Add a Member to a Group (826452)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to assign a permission to a file or to add a member to a group, an Object Picker dialog box may display the message "Account unknown." You may also receive the following error message:
sid2name S-1-5-21-1482476501-688789844-725345543-512
LookupAccountSid failed, LastError = 1789

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows cannot resolve security identifiers (SIDs) to names. An SID is a numeric value that identifies a user or group. For each access control entry (ACE), an SID identifies the user or the group for whom access is permitted, denied, or audited.
