This article describes a program error that can have the following error signatures:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print a mail merge in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Publisher cannot print CMYK composite to a black & white printer. To print CMYK composite, choose a color printer.
When you click OK to close the error message, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following message
Microsoft Publisher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you try to print a mail merge to a PostScript printer with the Print Composite CMYK by default option turned on.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, and then turn off the Print Composite CMYK by default option. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. After you restart Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, do not open your mail merge publication.
  2. On the New Publication task pane, click Blank Print Publication.
  3. On the File menu, click Print.
  4. In the Print dialog box, click Advanced Print Settings.
  5. On the Separations tab, click to clear the Print Composite CMYK by default check box.
  6. Click OK to close the Advanced Print Settings dialog box.
  7. Click Cancel to close the Print dialog box.
  8. Open your mail merge publication, and then print your mail merge.
