Userenv Errors 1504 and 1509 in the Windows XP Application Event Log After You Apply a Redirector Hotfix (826379)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1
SYMPTOMSUsers have assigned roaming profiles on a network share hosted on a Network Appliance (NetApp) Filer.
After you apply a recent Windows XP Post-SP1 redirector hotfix (for example Q811492 or Q816557)
to a Windows XP-based client, sharing violations may occur while the profiles are written back from the Windows XP workstations to the NetApp filer.
The files that are not written back successfully appear as *.tmp files after the user's next logon.

Description:
Windows cannot update your roaming profile. Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is in use by another process.
or
DETAIL - Cannot create a file when that file already exists. Most frequently, this issue affects .lnk, .url or .xml files.
During the update of roaming profiles, they are renamed to .tmp while the profile is written back to the home folder on a NetApp Filer share.CAUSEThis issue may occur if the NetApp Filer has timing problems and returns incorrect SMB status codes.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, update the NetApp Filer to ONTAP Release 6.4.1D16. For more information, visit the following Network Appliance (NetApp) Web site: Note Originally, NetApp Filer ONTAP Release 6.3.2D6 solved this profile issue, but that version had a regression with domain controller failover.
