Local undeliverable messages stay in the local delivery queue for two days before an NDR is sent (826134)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to send an e-mail message to a local mailbox, and the message cannot be delivered, the message stays in the local delivery queue of the mailbox store for two days before your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server returns a non-delivery report (NDR). During the two days that the message stays in the local delivery queue, the Exchange 2000 mailbox store tries to deliver the message. Events that are similar to the following may be logged in the application log:Event Type: Error

Description: The following call : EcSetFileHandleProp to the store failed. Error code : -1026. MDB : 44985987-446c-4e20-9773-bcd57587fd5f. FID : . MID : . File : C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue\NTFS_fb3dca8001c35dff00000003.EML

CAUSE

This problem occurs because messages that cause the JET_errRecordTooBig error to occur are kept in the local delivery queue. The mailbox store tries to deliver the message for two days. If the message cannot be delivered after two days, an NDR is sent to the sender of the message, and the mailbox store stops trying to deliver the message.
