UPS Service Does Not Detect When a COM Port Is Reconnected (825913)

SYMPTOMS

If you have a device installed on your Windows Server 2003-based computer that converts a universal serial bus (USB) connection to a COM (serial) port connection, and that device is momentarily disconnected and then reconnected, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) service loses its connection to the port.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, stop and then restart the UPS service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the Services list, right-click Uninterruptible Power Supply, and then click Stop.
  3. In the Services list, right-click Uninterruptible Power Supply, and then click Start.
  4. On the File menu, click Exit to close the Services dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
