SYMPTOMS

When you run an encrypted stored procedure that contains a dynamic query, and you have turned on the SET STATISTICS PROFILE option, the dynamic query statement or statements may appear in the execution plan of the encrypted stored procedure.

Note In SQL Query Analyzer, turn on the Show Execution Plan option on the Query menu to view the execution plan that the encrypted stored procedure generates.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, include the SET SHOWPLAN_ALL ON Transact-SQL statement or the SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT ON Transact-SQL statement when you run an encrypted stored procedure that contains a dynamic query if you have turned on the SET STATISTICS PROFILE option.

For example, use the following Transact-SQL statements to work around this problem.
SET STATISTICS PROFILE ON 
GO

SET SHOWPLAN_ALL ON
GO

--  Run the encrypted stored procedure that contains dynamic SQL statements
EXEC sp_EncryptedStoredProc 
GO

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Start SQL Query Analyzer, and then connect to SQL Server database.
  2. Run the following Transact-SQL statement in SQL Query Analyzer to create an encrypted stored procedure.
    CREATE PROCEDURE sp_EncryptedStoredProc 
    WITH ENCRYPTION AS 
    BEGIN 
    	--  Standard SQL Statement
    	SELECT GETDATE()
    
    	--  Dynamic SQL Statement
    	EXEC('SELECT @@VERSION')
    END
  3. Turn on the SET STATISTICS PROFILE option, and then run the encrypted stored procedure that you created in step 2. To do this, run the following Transact-SQL statements.
    SET STATISTICS PROFILE ON 
    GO
    EXEC sp_EncryptedStoredProc
    GO
  4. Notice the dynamic Transact-SQL statement that appears under the StmtText column in the Results pane. The StmtText column appears in the clear text format. However, the standard Transact-SQL statement is encrypted.
