This article describes the Microsoft Office XP French Proofing Tools issue that is fixed in the Office XP French Proofing Tools Post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package that is dated August 12, 2003.

Issues That Are Fixed in this Hotfix Package

The following issue is fixed in this hotfix package but was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
  • When you type text that contains underscores in a French language Office XP document, your Office XP program may stop responding (hang) or you may receive the following error message:
    Microsoft program has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    For example, this problem may occur in a Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation. If you view the details of the error message, you may receive an error signature that is similar to the following:

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.   • The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office XP SP-2 installed.

  • The optimized version of this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later.

  • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix with Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1). However, Microsoft has not tested this fix on Office XP SP-1 to the same extent as on Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2). If you install this hotfix on a computer with Office XP SP-1 installed, some file conflicts might occur. Microsoft supports this configuration, but Microsoft does not recommend this configuration.
For the French Proofing Tools Kit, the following prerequisites apply.
