You cannot update a linked image when you click Update Now in Word 2003 (825773)

SYMPTOMS

You insert an image that is linked to a file into a Word 2003 document. When you click Update Now in the Links dialog box, the changes to the image do not appear in your document.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the code that updates the linked image cannot locate the image file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Manually Select the Updated Image

Use the Change Source option to manually select the updated image. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word 2003, and then open the document that contains the linked image that you want to update.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Links.
  3. Click the image file in the Source file list, and then click Change Source.
  4. Locate and click the image file that has been updated, and then click Open.
  5. Click OK.

Method 2: Turn Off the Update Links on Save Option

To turn off the Update links on save option in Word 2003, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the General tab, and then click Web Options.
  4. Click the Files tab, and then click to clear the Update links on save check box.
  5. Click OK, and then click OK.
