A red X character appears when you paste a linked image in Office 2003 (825772)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you copy an image that is linked to a file from Word 2003 and then paste the image in a different Office program, such as Microsoft Office Excel 2003 or Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003, the image is not displayed. A red X character is displayed where you paste the image.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:
  • You insert an image in a Word 2003 document and that image is linked to a file. For example, the image file is linked to the My Pictures folder.
  • You save the document, reopen it, and then update the image. For example, you move the image to the front of the document text.
  • You copy the image, and then paste it in a different Office program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off the Update links on save option in Word 2003. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the General tab, and then click Web Options.
  4. Click the Files tab, and then click to clear the Update links on save check box.
  5. Click OK two times.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
