  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
  • Microsoft Office 2003, All Editions
  • Microsoft Office Professional Ed 2003
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a document workspace on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) server that is located outside your network or on a restricted site, you may receive the following message:The location you selected for your new Document Workspace is a restricted or non-trusted site. If you are certain that this site cannot damage your computer or data, add it to your Trusted sites and then try creating the Document Workspace again.Additionally, if a user tries to open a shared attachment or local document workspace document where the workspace is located on a restricted WSS server or a server outside their network, the user may not be able to receive updates for the shared attachment.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the document workspace is located on a server that is not on a trusted site, or is on a restricted site according to the Internet security settings on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Note Modifying the security settings on your computer can have a serious effect on the vulnerability of your computer. Make sure that you understand the security implications before you add a site to your trusted sites or make changes to the security settings on your computer. For additional information, see the "More Information" section of this article.

Method 1: Locate the Document Workspace on a Non-Restricted Site

If you can locate the document workspace in a location that you know is not restricted by the users, this is the preferred method to resolve this issue.

Method 2: Add the Document Workspace Site to your Trusted Sites

Important Make sure that you understand the security implications of doing this before you continue. For additional information, see the "More information" section of this article.

To add the document workspace site to your Trusted Sites zone in Internet Options, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab, click Trusted sites, and then click Sites.
  3. Under Add this Web site to the zone, type the address of the site that you want to add, and then click Add.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.

MORE INFORMATION

When you can, it is a good idea to host your document library site (such as described in this article) on a dedicated domain, instead of on the root domain of your company's Web site.
