SYMPTOMS When you install Microsoft Windows 98 on a Virtual PC for Mac virtual
machine, when you type your product
key and click OK, you may receive the following error message Application Error
SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module PIDGEN.DLL @ 0001:5F2C
MSGSRV32 caused an General Protection Fault in PIDGEN.DLL
You may also experience this behavior if you start your computer by using a
Windows 98 Startup disk, and then you try to install Windows 98 from a CD-ROM. You may also experience this behavior if you try to view your hardware configuration by using
the System Information tool. CAUSE This behavior may occur for either of the following
reasons: - You run Setup from the floppy disk version of
Windows 98 and you type the incorrect product key.
- Your computer's date is set incorrectly.
RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, use the method that is appropriate to your situation. Incorrect product key Type the correct product key. If you have misplaced your
product key, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the correct
product key for Windows 98. Incorrect date Reset your host Macintosh's date to the correct date. To do so,
follow these steps: Mac OS 9- On the Apple menu, point to Control
Panels, and then click Date &
Time.
- Adjust the date.
- Close Date & Time.
Mac OS X- In the Finder, click the clock, and then click Open
Date & Time.
- On the Date & Time tab, adjust the
date.
- Click Save, and then close Date
& Time.
If you reset the date but your Macintosh
computer resets to an incorrect date, replace your Parameter RAM (PRAM) battery.
