Token Ring Support in Virtual PC for Mac (825544)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 5.0

SUMMARY

This article discusses the support for Token Ring network adapters in Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac and Connectix Virtual PC for Mac.

MORE INFORMATION

The Virtual PC for Mac program emulates an Ethernet network adapter in the virtual machine environment. Because of this, operating systems that you install in the virtual machine detect an Ethernet network adapter even if the Macintosh computer contains a network adapter that is not an Ethernet adapter. Virtual PC for Mac provides the following two methods to integrate the virtual machine guest operating system networking environment and the Macintosh computer networking environment:
  • Shared Networking The Shared Networking method works at the Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) level. This networking method is compatible with any TCP/IP host networking connection. If you use the virtual machine guest operating system to run programs that use TCP/IP protocols, you can use the Shared Networking method. The Shared Networking method supports the installation of a Token Ring network adapter in the Macintosh computer.
  • Virtual Switch The Virtual Switch networking method works at the Ethernet networking level. This networking method provides a bridge between the emulated Ethernet adapter in the virtual machine and the physical Ethernet adapter in the host computer. This networking method requires the installation of an Ethernet network adapter in the Macintosh computer. This networking method does not support Token Ring network adapters.
