"This application uses CTL3D32.dll, which has not been correctly installed" error message when you install Virtual PC on Windows NT 4.0 (825419)

  • Connectix Virtual PC for Windows version 4.3
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Windows version 5.0
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Windows version 5.1
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Windows version 5.2

SYMPTOMS

When you install Connectix Virtual PC for Windows on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer, you may receive the following error message after the computer restarts during Setup:
This application uses CTL3D32.dll, which has not been correctly installed.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you take both of the following actions when you run Virtual PC Setup:
  • You click Custom as the setup type.
  • You change the installation location to install to the desktop.
By design, Windows NT 4.0 does not permit system files on the desktop.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, select an installation location other than the desktop when you install Virtual PC.
