-39 Error when you click a VHD file in Mac OS 9 (825395)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0, when used with:
    • the operating system: Mac OS 9.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0, when you click a VHD file in the Mac finder you may receive the following error message:
-39 error

CAUSE

This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • An earlier version of Virtual PC is still installed on your system.
  • Your desktop has not been rebuilt since you installed Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. If an earlier version of Virtual PC is still installed on your system, remove that version. To remove the earlier version of Virtual PC, drag the following items to the trash can:
    • The Virtual PC program
      Look for the earlier version of Virtual PC program on your Mac desktop. The program is typically located in your Applications folder.
    • The Virtual PC List folder
      Look for the earlier version of Virtual PC List folder on your Mac desktop. This folder is typically located in your Documents folder.
    • The Virtual PC Scripts folder
      Look for the earlier version of Virtual PC Scripts folder on your Mac desktop. This folder is typically located in your Documents folder.

      Note If you have never enabled scripts, you may not have a Scripts folder.
  2. Rebuild your desktop. To do this, restart the computer while you press and hold down COMMAND+OPTION. When you see the Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk Disk Name? dialog box, release the COMMAND+OPTION keys, and then click OK.

Rebuild the Desktop file in Mac Systems 8.x and 9.x

It is a good idea to rebuild your desktop file regularly, as frequently as one time each month. Your desktop includes a pair of hidden system files that maintain information about the files, folders, and programs on your hard disk drive.

Occasionally, your desktop file may become too large or may become damaged. Rebuilding the desktop file relinks documents to their correct programs and rewrites the desktop file.

Before you rebuild the desktop, verify that you have sufficient space available on the hard disk. A good guideline is to always have five percent of the hard disk drive (or other volume) available as free space.

Before you rebuild your desktop, use the Extensions Manager to save a record of the extensions that are currently turned on. To do this, open Extensions Manager in Control Panels. Click the Sets shortcut menu, and then click Save Set. When the Save Set dialog box opens, type a name for your currently selected extensions (such as "My Extensions"). When you close the dialog box, the name of your set is added to the Sets menu.

To rebuild your desktop, follow these steps:
  1. Turn off all extensions. Click the Sets shortcut menu again, and then click All Off.
  2. Restart your computer while holding down COMMAND+OPTION.
  3. When you see the Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk Disk Name? dialog box, release the COMMAND+OPTION keys, and then click OK.
  4. When the desktop is rebuilt, click the Apple menu, and then click Control Panels.
  5. Open Extensions Manager.
  6. Turn on your extensions by clicking the Sets shortcut menu and clicking the name that you gave your set of extensions (such as "My Extensions").
  7. Restart your computer. If the system error does not recur after you rebuild your desktop, you can conclude that you had a damaged desktop file.
