Attached hard disk image is not duplicated when you duplicate a virtual machine (825358)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you duplicate a virtual machine that has an external hard disk image attached as a secondary drive, the secondary drive is not duplicated.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the duplication process copies only the virtual machine. The duplication process does not make duplicates of any hard disk images that are attached to the virtual machine. However, the duplication process does duplicate the virtual machine's saved state that includes information about the external hard disk images.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, discard the virtual machine's saved state, and then reattach the hard disk image or a duplicate of the hard disk image to the duplicate virtual machine. To discard the virtual machine's saved state, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac or Connectix Virtual PC for Mac, and then start the duplicate virtual machine.
  2. After the virtual machine has started, click Start, click Turn off computer, and then click Turn off.
  3. Click Discard hard drive changes.
  4. Click Discard.
