You Cannot Run Multiple Instances of Virtual PC for Mac on a Network (825339)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 6.0
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run several instances of Virtual PC for Mac on several computers that are on a network, each instance of Virtual PC except one enters paused mode and stops all operations.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if more than one instance of Virtual PC for Mac uses the same serial number. As outlined in the Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac End-User License Agreement, you can install and use one instance of Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac on a single computer.

In a network, Virtual PC checks to see if there are other instances of Virtual PC running. If there are, the instances of Virtual PC compare serial numbers.

If the serial numbers are different, the instances can coexist without any problem. If the serial numbers are the same, each instance of Virtual PC that uses the same serial number enters paused mode until only one instance is running on the network.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, purchase a copy of Virtual PC for Mac for each computer where you want to run Virtual PC for Mac.
