MORE INFORMATION

To create a Windows 98 EBD from IBM PC DOS 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Start the IBM PC DOS 2000 guest operating system.
  2. In the host PC, click Start, point to Programs, and then click Connectix Virtual PC.
  3. In the Virtual PC window, point to File, and then click Virtual Disk Wizard.
  4. In the Virtual Disk Wizard, click Next.
  5. Under Select Operation, click Create new floppy or hard disk image, and then click Next.
  6. Under Select New Disk Type, click Create floppy disk image, and then click Next.
  7. Type a name for the new floppy disk image (such as Windows 98 Emergency Boot Disk) in the Disk image location box, and then click Browse to specify a location to save the new floppy disk image.
  8. In the New Floppy Disk dialog box, click the folder where you want to save the new floppy disk image, and then click Save.
  9. Click the appropriate type of floppy disk (720 KB or 1.44 MB disk), click Next, and then click Finish.
  10. Mount the new disk image. To do so, use any one of the following methods:
    • Drag the Windows 98 Emergency Boot Disk.vfd disk image to the IBM PC DOS 2000 guest operating system's floppy disk icon. The icon is located at the lower left corner of the Virtual PC toolbar.
    • Right-click the Floppy icon, and then click Capture Image.
    • From the Floppy menu in your guest operating system, click Capture Image, locate the Windows 98 EBD that you saved in step 8, and then double-click the file to mount it.
  11. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
  12. From the CD menu in your guest operating system, click Capture Host Drive to capture the Windows 98 CD-ROM from the host PC.
  13. At a command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive (typically, drive D or drive E). To do so, type D:, or type E:, and then press ENTER.
  14. Change to the Oldmsdos folder. To do so, type cd\tools\oldmsdos, and then press ENTER.
  15. Run Smartdrv.exe. To do so, type Smartdrv.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note Smartdrv.exe creates the disk image faster. If you want, you can skip step 15.
  16. Change to the Fat32ebd folder. To do so, type cd\tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd, and then press ENTER.
  17. Type Fat32ebd.exe, and then press ENTER to run Fat32ebd.exe.
  18. Press Y to continue, and then press ENTER.
  19. Copy Smartdrv.exe to the disk image that is created in the floppy drive. To do so, type copy CD-ROM drive:\tools\oldmsdos\smartdrv.exe a:, where CD-ROM drive is the name of your CD-ROM drive (drive D or drive E), and then press ENTER.
  20. To check the Windows 98 EBD that you created, restart the IBM PC DOS 2000 guest operating system. If you created the disk correctly, the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu appears. The Startup Menu has two options.
  21. Press ENTER to select option 1 (Start computer with CD-ROM support)
  22. When the computer starts with the Windows 98 EBD support, an A:\> command prompt appears.
  23. Make sure that the Windows 98 CD is in the CD-ROM drive, and is captured in the guest operating system. (See step 12 for details).
  24. Change to the CD-ROM drive (typically, drive D or drive E). To do so, type D:, or type E:, and then press ENTER.
  25. Type dir, and then press ENTER to check the contents of the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
  26. Make sure that the list of contents that appears on the screen includes "Win98 <DIR>".
Note This disk is different from the Windows 98 Startup Disk that is created from Control Panel in Windows 98. This is a feature-limited emergency floppy disk.
