SUMMARY

This article describes how Connectix Virtual PC for Windows uses split disk images.

MORE INFORMATION

Because of limitations in some host operating systems and volume formats, you may want to split dynamically expanding disk image files. In particular, FAT16 and FAT32 file systems only support file sizes up to 2 gigabytes (GB) and 4 GB, respectively. For example, if you use an 8 GB dynamically expanding drive image that is formatted for FAT32, Virtual PC splits the drive image into two 4 GB files. Virtual PC splits dynamically expanding images and differencing images where they cross the file size limit that the volume format imposes. If the disk image is located on a volume that does not impose these limitations (such as the NTFS file system), the disk image stays intact.
