Windows uses split disk images.MORE INFORMATIONBecause of limitations in some host operating
systems and volume formats, you may want to split dynamically
expanding disk image files. In particular, FAT16 and FAT32 file systems only
support file sizes up to 2 gigabytes (GB) and 4 GB, respectively. For example,
if you use an 8 GB dynamically expanding drive image that is formatted for FAT32,
Virtual PC splits the drive image into two 4 GB files. Virtual PC splits dynamically expanding
images and differencing images where they cross the file
size limit that the volume format imposes. If the disk image is
located on a volume that does not impose these limitations (such as the NTFS
