The Add-In 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Xcolext' could not be installed" error message when you start Microsoft Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2002 (825034)

SYMPTOMSAfter you upgrade your computer from Windows 98 to Windows XP, you may receive the following error when you start Outlook: The add-in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Xcolext.DLL" could not be installed or loaded If you click OK on this error message, Outlook starts correctly. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, follow these steps: - Start Outlook.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Other tab, and then click Advanced Options.
- On the Advanced Options dialog box, click Add-In Manager.
- In the Add-In Manager dialog box, click to clear the XTNDConnectPC check box.
- Click OK three times.
- Quit and then restart Outlook.
If you still receive the error message, update the Extend.dat file. The Extend.dat
file is a binary file that caches the registry extension entries.
To update the Extend.dat file, follow these steps: - Quit all programs.
- Click Start, point to Search, and then click All Files and Folders.
- Type extend.dat in the All or part of the file name box.
- In the Look In box, click your hard disk.
- Click Search.
- In the results pane, right-click the Extend.dat file, and then click Rename.
- Type extend.old, and then press ENTER.
- On the File menu, click Close.
- Restart Outlook.
A new Extend.dat file is created.
