"Error: Access Is Denied" Error Message Occurs When You Try to Access a Shared Folder (823908)



The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to access a shared folder, you receive the following error message:
Error: access is denied

CAUSE

This issue may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • You created a shared folder and then granted a domain local group that included the Everyone group permissions to access this folder when the server was in mixed mode.
  • You changed the server to native mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use Computer Management to create a new local group, add the Everyone group to the new local group, and then grant the new local group permission to access the shared folder.

Note If you are using the Microsoft Active Directory directory service, use Active Directory Users and Computers to create a new local group. The following procedure assumes that you are not using Active Directory.

To resolve this issue using Computer Management, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
  2. Double-click System Tools, double-click Local Users and Groups, and then double-click Groups.
  3. Click Action, and then click New Group.
  4. In Group name, type a name for the new group.
  5. In Description, type a description of the new group.
  6. Click Add to add a member to the new group.
  7. In the Enter the object names to selectbox, type Everyone, and then click OK
  8. Click Create, and then click Close.
  9. On the computer that hosts the shared folder, open Windows Explorer, right-click the shared folder, and then click Sharing.
  10. On the Sharing tab, click Permissions, and then click Add.
  11. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups list, click the new local group you created, click Add, and then click OK.
