Internet Explorer Stops Responding When You Open an FTP Site (823837)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 64-Bit Edition SP1, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP SP1
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP SP1

SYMPTOMS

If the following conditions are true, Microsoft Internet Explorer may stop responding when you open an FTP site that is four or five folders deep:
  • You are using Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP SP1.

    -and-
  • The Enable folder view for FTP sites check box in the advanced Internet options is selected.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

The Windows XP version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows XP Service Pack 1.
To turn on folder view for FTP sites, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Enable folder view for FTP sites check box.
