You receive an "action could not be completed" error message when you start Entourage X for Mac (823668)

SYMPTOMSWhen you start Entourage X for Mac, you may receive the following error message: Action could not be completed, mail error.
The program opens but you cannot send or receive mail. Additionally, Entourage X may stop responding and abruptly quit. CAUSEThis problem may occur if Microsoft Office v.X for Mac and Entourage X preference files and identity files become damaged.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, use each of the following methods in the order that they appear. Note Before you use any of the following methods, make a back up copy of your identity folder.
To make a copy of your identity folder, follow these steps: - Double-click your hard disk icon.
- On the Toolbar, click the Home icon.
- Double-click Documents.
- Double-click Microsoft User Data, and then double-click Office X Identities.
- Press and hold the OPTION key, click the Main Identity folder, and then drag the folder to either another volume on your computer or to your desktop.
Note If you have multiple identities, a folder is created for each unique identity. This folder has the same name that you use for the identity and is stored at the same folder level as the main identity. Repeat this step for each identity in the Office X Identities folder.
Method 1: Typical Rebuild of Identity
Many problems can be resolved by rebuilding the identities that are used by Entourage X. To do this, follow these steps: - If you are running Entourage X, quit the program.
- Hold down the Option key, and then double-click the Entourage X icon.
- Click Typical Rebuild.
- Click OK.
If the problem still occurs, continue to the next method.
Method 2: Delete Preferences
Sometimes the preference files that are used by Entourage X may be damaged and must be recreated by Entourage X. To do this, follow these steps: - If you are running Entourage X, quit the program.
- If you have a folder open, click Home.
If you do not have a folder open, double-click the hard disk icon, and then click Home. - Double-click the Library folder, and then double-click Preferences.
- Locate the following file:
com.microsoft.Entourage.plist - Press and hold the CTRL key, click the com.microsoft.Entourage.plist file, and then click Move to Trash.
- Locate the Microsoft folder, and then open the folder.
- Locate the following files:
- For each of these files, press and hold the CTRL key, click one of the files, and then click Move to Trash.
- Close all open folders.
- Start Entourage X.
If the problem still occurs, continue to the next method.
Method 3: Rebuild the Microsoft Preferences and FontsNote If you have Microsoft Office 2004 installed and you want to keep its preferences, move the Office 2004 files out of the ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder before you delete it. Move the Office 2004 files back to the Microsoft folder after you finish troubleshooting Entourage X.
The problem may be caused by various problems in the Microsoft preference folder and possibly with the Office X fonts.
To rebuild the Microsoft preferences folder or the Office X fonts, follow these steps: - If you are running Entourage X, quit the program.
- If you have a folder open, click Home.
If you do not have a folder open, double-click the hard disk icon, and then click Home. - Double-click the Library folder, and then double-click Preferences.
- Locate the Microsoft folder, press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the Microsoft folder.
- Click Move to Trash.
- Close the Preferences folder or click the Back button to return to the Library folder.
- Locate and double-click the Font folder.
- Press and hold the Apple/Command key, and then click to select each of the following fonts:
- Century Gothic
- Copperplate Gothic Bold
- Copperplate Gothic Light
- Curlz MT
- Edwardian Script
- Lucida Handwriting
- Monotype Sorts
- Tahoma
- Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click one of the font files that you selected.
- Click Move to Trash.
- Start Entourage X.
This method rebuilds the Office X preferences and reinstalls the Office X installed fonts.
