You receive a "The database this server is using does not support search" error message when you configure full-text search for a Windows SharePoint Services virtual server (823377)

SYMPTOMSWhen you click Configure full-text search
on the Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration page to configure
full-text search for a virtual server, you may receive the following error
message: The database this server is using does not
support search CAUSEThis problem occurs if Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop
Engine (MSDE) is used as the database server.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, upgrade the database instance from
MSDE to Microsoft SQL Server 2000, apply Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack
3 (SP3) or later, and then configure full-text search for the virtual server.
Follow these steps to upgrade the database instance to SQL Server 2000 SP3 or
later on a single-server deployment of Windows SharePoint Services:
- Run the SQL Server 2000 Setup, and then click SQL
Server 2000 Components.
- Click Install Database Server, and then
click Next.
- On the Computer Name page, click Local
computer, and then click Next.
- On the Installation Selection page, click Upgrade,
remove, or add components to an existing instance of SQL Server, and
then click Next.
- On the Instance Name page, click to clear the
Default check box (if it is selected), click
SHAREPOINT in the Instance name box, and then
click Next.
- On the Existing Installation page, verify that
Upgrade your existing installation is selected, and then click
Next.
- On the Upgrade page, click to select the Yes,
upgrade my programs check box, and then click Next.
- On the Licensing Options page, specify the licensing
options that you want, and then click Continue.
- When you are prompted to install additional components,
click Yes.
- On the Select Components page, click Server
Components (but do not click to clear the Server
Components check box), and then click to select the Full-Text
Search check box.
- Click Management Tools (but do not click
to clear the Management Tools check box), and then click to
select both the Enterprise Manager and the Query
Analyzer check boxes (if they are not already selected).
- Select any other components that you want, and then click
Next.
- On the Start Copying Files page, click
Next, and then click Finish.
- Install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later. When
you install SQL Server 2000 SP3, you receive the SQL Server 2000
Service Pack 3 Setup dialog box that contains both the Upgrade
Microsoft Search and the apply SQL Server 2000 SP3
(required) check boxes. If you want to have full-text search
functionality on the server, you must click to select the Upgrade
Microsoft Search and apply SQL Server 2000 SP3 (required) check
box.
